Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (2027)

From January 1, 2027, a taxpayer in a participating state can claim a federal credit of up to $1,700 for donating to a scholarship granting organization. Texas announced its intent to opt in on December 10, 2025.

The credit comes from the 2025 federal tax law. A donor can give up to $1,700 to a certified scholarship organization and take the full amount off their federal tax bill, which makes it cheap to give.

Eligibility is pegged to 300% of area median income, three times the local midpoint, so it reaches far into the middle class in Tarrant, Parker and Johnson counties. The funding isn't fixed by the state budget; it depends on how much donors give.

For Fort Worth families it could become a second layer above TEFA at a Catholic or Christian high school, or a stopgap for a child still on the waitlist. We'll list organizations that serve Tarrant County once they're certified.

Combining it with other sources

Families rarely rely on one source alone. This one generally stacks with a school's own discounts and aid and with at least one other source on this site, and the funding check lays out the order that works for your child.
