Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA)

Texas's education savings account pays $10,474 in 2026-27 for a Fort Worth-area student enrolled at a participating private school. The state releases the money in three installments through Odyssey.

Fort Worth ISD families came out of year one with 1,764 funded accounts as of July 29, 2026, the fifth-highest count of any district in Texas. Arlington ISD followed locally with 888, then Northwest ISD (768), Keller ISD (661), Mansfield ISD (568) and Crowley ISD (512).

The money comes from Senate Bill 2, which the Legislature passed in 2025 with $1 billion for the first year. The Texas Comptroller administers the accounts, and Odyssey runs the family portal, the school payments and the vendor marketplace. The 2026-27 amount equals 85% of average state and local per-student funding, and it is identical in kindergarten and in grade 12.

Schools don't get the whole year up front. A private-school account receives 25% on July 1, another 25% on October 1 and the final 50% on February 1. Money a family doesn't spend stays in the account for the next year as long as the child remains in the program.

Statewide, more than 274,000 students applied for roughly 85,000 funded seats. The Comptroller's July 29 snapshot counted 85,344 funded accounts and more than 121,000 children still waiting. FOX 4 reported in April that Fort Worth ISD alone produced 4,803 applications, the tenth-most of any Texas district.

Students who weren't funded must apply again for 2027-28; there is no carry-over from the waitlist. Second-year dates haven't been announced. When they are, siblings of current participants are placed first.
